How to use it
Type the word with a blank for every letter you don't know. Use ?, _ or a space for blanks: C?A?E, C_A_E and C A E (with two spaces) all mean a five-letter word with C first, A third and E last. The number of characters you type sets the word length, from three to seven letters.
Type any letters you have ruled out into Not in word, and letters you know are somewhere in the word into In the word. Tap a result to copy it.
When a pattern search helps
Pattern searches suit crossword clues where the crossing answers have given you some letters, hangman, and word puzzles that reveal letters in fixed positions. For Wordle, where you also know letters that are in the wrong spot, the Wordle solver or a word finder with its Wrong spot boxes is the better fit.
Which words are included
TileHound uses the ENABLE word list, a public-domain list of English words accepted by most word games. It has 51,656 words of three to seven letters. Offensive words have been removed. Each game has its own dictionary, so a word here may occasionally be rejected by a game, or a game may accept a word that is not listed.
Questions
Which characters count as a blank?
A question mark, an underscore, a full stop, an asterisk, a hyphen or a space between letters. Letters are matched in the exact positions you typed them.
How long can the pattern be?
Three to seven characters, counting the blanks. That covers the word lengths in our word list.
Can I search for words that contain letters in any position?
Yes. Type those letters into In the word, below the pattern. For example, pattern ?????, in the word Z, finds every five-letter word with a Z anywhere.
Is TileHound free?
Yes. It runs in your browser without an account, and nothing you type is sent to a server.
