How to use it
On the Guess board tab, type a word you have already played and press Add. Tap each tile until it matches the colors the game showed you: gray for a letter not in the answer, yellow for a letter in the wrong spot and green for a letter in the right spot. Add each guess the same way and the list narrows after every one.
On the Letters tab, type letters you have placed into the Correct spot boxes. Put letters that are in the word but not in that position into the matching Wrong spot box; a box can hold several letters. If you only know a word contains certain letters, in any order, type them into In the word. Type every letter you have ruled out into Not in word. The results update as you type.
On the Unscramble tab, type the letters you have, up to 15. Use ? for a blank tile. You get every 5-letter word those letters can make, and each letter is used only as many times as you typed it.
Tap any word in the results to copy it. Sort by Best guess to see the words most likely to split the remaining list, A–Z for an alphabetical list, or Points for Scrabble scores.
Picking your next guess
The list is sorted by Best guess: words at the top use the letters that appear most often among the answers still possible, in the positions where they most often appear. Playing one of them rules out the largest share of the list, which matters more than guessing the answer one turn early.
When only a handful of words are left and they differ by a single letter, such as -IGHT or -OUND endings, it can be faster to play a word that tests several of those letters at once, even if it cannot be the answer.
Solving 4, 6 and 7 letter Wordle games
The guess board also works for Wordle-style games with other word lengths. Open the 4, 6 or 7 letter word finder and switch to its Guess board tab. If you only know which letters are in the answer, not where, type them into In the word on the Letters tab instead.
Which words are included
TileHound uses the ENABLE word list, a public-domain list of English words accepted by most word games. It has 8,586 5-letter words. Offensive words have been removed. Each game has its own dictionary, so a word here may occasionally be rejected by a game, or a game may accept a word that is not listed.

What is a good first guess?
A strong opener uses five different common letters. Ranked by how many common letters they cover across all 8,586 five-letter words in our list, the top openers are LARES, TARES and RALES.
How many 5-letter words are there?
Our word list has 8,586 5-letter words. Most games use a similar list, but each game's dictionary differs slightly.
What does "wrong spot" mean?
The letter is in the answer, but not in the position where you tried it. In Wordle it is shown in yellow. TileHound keeps words that contain the letter somewhere else.
How do repeated letters work?
If a guess shows one copy of a letter as green or yellow and another copy as gray, the answer contains that letter exactly as many times as it was colored. TileHound applies the same rule, so a gray copy does not remove the letter altogether.
Is TileHound free?
Yes. Every tool works in your browser without an account, and nothing you type is sent to a server.
